Grants and scholarships are the most popular type of financial aid because they do not need to be repaid.

 

Grants: Grants are based on financial need. The most popular is the Federal Pell Grant Program. The grant amounts are dependent on:

  • Estimated family contribution
  • The cost of attendance
  • The student’s enrollment status (full- or part-time)
  • Whether the student attends for a full academic year or less

Scholarships: Scholarships are normally based on merit, including:

  • Academic performance
  • Special talents
  • Other criteria
