Early College Opportunities

Interested in going to college? What if you could enter college knowing that you have already earned six, twelve, or even thirty college credits? Juniors and seniors are encouraged to enroll in early college programs which can provide up to two years of college-level coursework. Here are some of the programs that may interest you:

Running Start Program

Running Start is a program that allows high school students to enroll in college classes and earn credit toward high school graduation and a college degree. You can participate in Running Start if you are:

  • Enrolled in 11th or 12th grade in any Hawai‘i public high school or charter school.
  • Under the age of 21 as of September 1st (of the school year in which you take your Running Start class).
  • Fulfill and comply with college campus requirements.

For more details go to the Running Start website here or see your school counselor. Note there are specific deadlines to apply for this program.

Advance Placement (AP Courses) Courses

If you’re planning to go to college, you should consider taking AP classes. The successful completion of AP classes will benefit you in the college application process, help you develop college-level academic skills, save you money on college tuition and help you in your college journey.
